The former West Bromwich Albion manager was in temporary charge before Alan Pardew’s appointment.
Gary Megson has criticised the attitude of old club West Bromwich Albion, as the Baggies saunter towards relegation.
Albion have only seven games in which to bridge the 10-point gap between themselves and West Ham United and Crystal Palace, who occupy the two positions directly above the bottom three, or surrender their Premier League status.
Yet despite having won once in 17 league games since his appointment last November, Alan Pardew remains as West Brom manager.
And Megson – who began the campaign as number two to Tony Pulis and went unbeaten in his two games as caretaker boss – told Monday’s episode of The Ref Show that the situation could have been different had the Baggies been more proactive.
“It does (pain me),” said the 58-year-old. “It (relegation) probably is inevitable now, but it wasn’t inevitable three or four games ago and yet they were talking like that, they’re sending out all the signals and I think it’s really poor.
“Every signal is, we’re down and we’ll try and sort it out for next season, and it’s not as easy as that. You’re not down until you just can’t get the amount of points.
“Sometimes you just get a catalyst, you win one game and another game goes in your favour and all of a sudden everything changes a little bit.”
Plenty of names have been linked with the Hawthorns post even though Pardew has remained in office.
When asked specifically about Michael Appleton however, Megson seemed unsure about the amount of substance behind the speculation.
“I think they will try and link people with an affiliation to West Brom,” he said. “Michael I know very well, I signed him down there, he offered me a job at Oxford and in the end he’s gone to Leicester as assistant.
“I think people have put two and two together. But at the moment I’m not sure what they’ll do.”
Megson also claimed he should have been given longer in the role, albeit on a temporary basis.
