Gary Megson has told Monday’s episode of The Ref Show that West Bromwich Albion should have given him more time as caretaker manager.

Megson stepped up from his role as Baggies assistant after Tony Pulis’ sacking last November, and picked up draws against Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United before being replaced by current boss Alan Pardew.

Pardew has only won one of his 17 Premier League fixtures, however, leaving West Brom’s relegation looking increasingly inevitable.

And when asked whether he should have been handed the role instead, Megson replied: “No. But there was a bit of bounce about the place – this was no reflection on Tony. And I thought that what they should have done is just left it for a bit.

“If we’d have played the Saturday after and got beat 7-0 then I’m on my bike and then go and do whatever, but it had changed a bit.

“Now if I’d have been in charge of the football club in terms of a chairman or an owner, I’d be looking at it and thinking, just leave that – there’s no need to do anything just yet. It might have got better, it might have got worse, but there was no need to do anything – something had just been done. But the club made their choice.”

Megson, under whom West Brom twice reached the Premier League during the previous decade, also revealed that Pardew phoned him after the 56-year-old’s appointment.

He added: “Alan actually rang me up, which was strange – I don’t mean strange because he’s alright.

“He says, just ringing you up to thank you for what you’ve done in the last 10/11 days. But you’ve stolen my thunder a little bit, because usually when you go in as a new manager, you’re picking it up from something that’s gone on and you can give it that lift. But the lift had already started.

“They’ve made decisions and they’ve made quite a few over the season that, in my view, are the wrong decisions.”

West Brom now have only seven games in which to bridge the 10-point gap between themselves and Pardew’s old sides West Ham United and Crystal Palace, who occupy 17th and 18th place, respectively.

Should West Bromwich Albion have given Megson more time earlier in the campaign?
