The former Sheffield Wednesday player and manager is delighted to see Fernando Forestieri back in action.
Gary Megson believes Sheffield Wednesday posses the Championship’s best player – providing he can ‘knuckle down’.
Fernando Forestieri returned to the Owls’ side after a seven-month lay-off against Preston on Friday, an occasion he marked by scoring the final goal in a 4-1 win for Jos Luhukay’s men.
The Argentina-born forward has finished as top scorer in each of his two full seasons at Hillsborough, although both were proceeded by bouts of alleged off-field indiscipline.
And discussing Forestieri’s return on Monday’s The Ref Show, Megson – a former Wednesday player and manager – said: “I think he’s the best player in the Championship. He seems to have baggage, from where I don’t know. But I think if he can settle down then he’ll be a massive asset for Wednesday.
“I don’t mean fitness wise, but what he’s done in the past like getting the hump because he wanted to leave Wednesday – those things stick in the throat a little bit. But in terms of talent and work rate and the way that he plays, he completely changes Wednesday.
“I used to watch him when he was at Watford and he was really talented but after a while they didn’t play him, so there’s obviously something in his make-up that clubs aren’t having. He gets the opportunity to play for an even bigger club and he’s got everything at his feet there.
“If he can just knuckle down – and I’m sure he can – and just plays how he plays he can be a massive asset for Wednesday.”
Wednesday’s underachievement this season could leave them vulnerable to offers for Forestieri during the summer transfer window, and Megson, for one, admits that he would be keen on taking 28-year-old if in charge of a Premier League club.
“Yeah, I would (sign him),” said the 58-year-old. “He could take Wednesday there (to the Premier League).”
Forestieri could make his first senior start since August when Sheffield Wednesday host Fulham on Saturday.
The London side are managed by his former Watford boss, Slavisa Jokanovic.
