Former Rangers striker Gary McSwegan has told The Scottish Sun that Celtic star Leigh Griffiths can break Denis Law’s record for Scotland.

Griffiths is one of the best strikers in the Scottish Premiership and is a key figure in the current Celtic squad.

The 26-year-old has made seven appearances for Scotland so far in his career.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker has yet to score for his national team and is not guaranteed a place in the starting lineup.

Former Rangers and Dundee United striker McSwegan, though, rates Griffiths highly, and believes that the Celtic star can break Law’s joint-record 30-goal tally for Scotland.

McSwegan, who is 46 years of age and now works as a scout for Championship club Preston North End, according to The Scottish Sun, played twice for Scotland back in 1999, scoring one goal in the process.

“I like Leigh Griffiths,” McSwegan told The Scottish Sun. “I’ve seen him since he was 17 and have always said he’s a natural finisher. I always look at boys and say could they break the record of Denis Law and Kenny Dalglish.

“I thought when Kris Boyd was coming through that he was the one who would maybe have a wee shot at it. But I think if Leigh gets a decent crack at it, he’s one that could possibly be up there.

“I know it’s a hard task, but you’ve got to set your sights high and I’d love to see someone like him pushing it.”

Griffiths is a very good striker, and he is certainly someone who should get more chances for Scotland.

The Celtic star has yet to make a massive impact for his national team, but fans should retain faith in him and in his ability to start firing for his country.
