Leeds United would have been disappointed with their narrow defeat against Charlton on Saturday.

One-time Leeds United loanee Gary McSheffrey has suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side should sign Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle.

The former Championship attacker warned that Leeds’ problems last season of not being able to put teams away will be their ‘achilles heel’ again this term.

Last season, Gayle was on a season-long loan at West Brom, who reached the play-off semi-finals before being beaten by Aston Villa – he scored in the first-leg.

Speaking to EFL on Quest (28/09/2019), McSheffrey thinks Gayle could be the answer to Leeds’ problems in the final third, as they currently sit fourth in the table.

“For me, [they need] a Dwight Gayle type of player,” McSheffrey told EFL on Quest. “I think they missed that last season as well. That’s what didn’t get them over the line. And that’s going to be their Achilles heel again as well.”

On Saturday, Leeds were beaten by their former player and Charlton manager Lee Bowyer, with the stats telling one story and the scoreline another.

It’s a theme that is now occurring with Leeds and it is something they will want to rectify pretty quickly if they are to finish in those automatic places.

Gayle returned to Newcastle over the summer, but because of an injury, he hasn’t featured for Steve Bruce’s side, as of yet, but he would be the ideal striker for any Championship team.

Whilst Gayle has struggled to prove his worth in England’s top-flight, he has been one of the Championship’s top-performers whenever he has played in it.
