Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister has told The Scottish Sun that the imminent signing of defender Jon Flanagan won’t spell the end for James Tavernier.

The Gers have already tied up five new signings this summer, as Allan McGregor, Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson, Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria have all arrived at Ibrox.

New Rangers boss Steven Gerrard continues to pursue new signings though, and the Daily Record reported on Wednesday that full back Jon Flanagan is all set for a move to Rangers.

Jon Flanagan of Liverpool during a pre-season friendly match between Tranmere Rovers and Liverpool at Prenton Park on July 12, 2017 in Birkenhead, England.

The 25-year-old right back, who played with Gerrard at Liverpool, is a free agent having left Anfield earlier this month and has allegedly flown out to Spain in order to undergo a medical with Rangers.

Flanagan adds to Gerrard’s defensive options, but some have been concerned that his arrival will lead to the departure of Rangers’ first choice right back James Tavernier.

The Scottish Sun reported earlier this week that Gerrard is willing to listen to offers over £3.5million for Tavernier, with Premier League side Crystal Palace and Swansea City of the Championship thought to be keen.

James Tavernier of Rangersis seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and St Johnstone at Ibrox Stadium on December 16, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Tavernier has been a mainstay of the Rangers side since being signed by Mark Warburton in the summer of 2015, with the 26-year-old scoring 23 goals in 125 games for the Gers.

With some fearing for his future, Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister has told The Scottish Sun that Tavernier is going to be ‘key’ for Rangers, and the deal for Flanagan won’t mean Tavernier is on his way out of Ibrox.

“In this period where Rangers have taken a bit of criticism, James has been one of the stand-out players and he is going to be key for us,” said McAllister.
