Gary McAllister suggests Rangers draw showed what’s wrong with Gers

Incoming Glasgow Rangers assistant boss Gary McAllister suggested that the Ibrox side’s defence needs work this summer.

In comments reported by the Evening Times, Gary McAllister has hinted that working on the Rangers defence will be the priority when he arrives as Steven Gerrard’s assistant in the summer.

The Gers are gearing up for what could be a hugely exciting summer for the club with Gerrard’s arrival imminent and one signing already through the door in the shape of Scott Arfield.

Despite the optimism, there is still a huge amount of work for Gerrard, McAllister and Mark Allen to do with Rangers registering a third place finish in the Scottish Premiership after a final day 5-5 draw with Hibernian that excited and infuriated the fans in equal measure.

And McAllister credited the incredible Easter Road clash for providing the potential starting point for the incoming management team as they consider the problems that they will need to address.

“When you watch the game and see a scoreline of 5-5 I think that kind of suggests what’s wrong,” he said, as reported by the Evening Times.

“But there’s a lot of positives too. Going forward and scoring five goals away from home is good at least.”

McAllister’s comments will undoubtedly please the Rangers fans. As exciting as the deal for Arfield and the reported £4 million bid for Oli McBurnie – as reported by The Sun – is, there appear to have been some concerns on social media that the issues at the back may be overlooked in the coming months.

With David Bates leaving for Hamburg, Russell Martin returning to Norwich City and Ross McCrorie clearly looking to be at his best when he is playing in the middle of the park rather than at centre-back, the Gers desperately need to add to their options in defence during the summer.

But McAllister’s comments surely hint that there will be a decent amount of focus on getting the right players in that will ensure that Rangers will be a much tougher team to break down next season.
