Brendan Rodgers decided against starting Gary Mackay-Steven for Celtic for much of last season.

Gary Mackay-Steven has told STV that he ‘needed to get’ out of Celtic, after playing so rarely last season.

Brendan Rodgers gave Mackay-Steven a few chances to impress for the Bhoys, but he failed to hold down a first-team spot.

And Mackay-Steven, who has now moved to Aberdeen, claims that he is glad to have left Celtic, as he didn’t want to sit on the substitutes’ bench any more.

“I needed to get out and play games,” he said. “I was in and around the team and then out last year. I didn’t want another season of being on the fringes.

“I wanted to be training and looking forward to a game on a Saturday. Here the club are challenging for honours every season, it’s a massive club and they really showed their interest in me. I want to look forward to this season now.

“As much as I enjoyed it at Celtic ultimately every player wants to play. I wasn’t happy being on the bench, I don’t think any footballer would be. I want to come here and show what I can offer and get back on track.”

Mackay-Steven made just 11 appearances across all competitions for Celtic last term.

The forward failed to score or provide an assist, and was then deemed surplus to requirements by Rodgers.

Celtic have already improved their attacking options this summer, by bringing in Jonny Hayes.

And Mackay-Steven appeared to have little chance of breaking into Celtic’s starting line-up this term.

Aberdeen were Celtic’s closest rivals for the title last term, and the Dons will be hoping to close the gap even further next time around.
