Spurs have just one win and two European exits to their name at the national stadium this season.
Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Gary Mabbutt has told the Daily Mail that he is confident that the club will end talk of a Wembley curse by winning the FA Cup this season.
Spurs have struggled desperately at the national stadium this season as they host their European fixtures away from their White Hart Lane home.
In fact, Mauricio Pochettino’s side won just one of their four home continental fixtures, suffering a Champions League group stage exit before immediately losing to Belgian side Gent in the Europa League.
Much has been made of the club’s struggles at Wembley, although club players and staff have repeatedly insisted that the change of venue has not been a factor.
Mabbutt, who led Spurs to FA Cup glory in 1991, certainly doesn’t subscribe to the negative view, and went as far as to suggest that the club can banish that talk for good by winning the FA Cup on the ground this season.
The former defender told the Mail: “I’ve been frustrated this season with people talking about a Wembley jinx. There were two poor performances at the start of the Champions League and that was it – it was nothing to do with a Wembley jinx.
“People building up the hoodoo of playing at Wembley, it’s absolute nonsense, and I think that will be proven this season because I’m quietly confident Tottenham will go on to win the FA Cup this year.”
Spurs have made good headway in the premier domestic cup competition so far this season, cruising past Aston Villa, edging a seven-goal thriller against Wycombe Wanderers, and comfortably dispatching Fulham thanks to Harry Kane’s hat-trick.
They will be expected to see off Millwall without too much trouble at White Hart Lane in this month’s quarter-final, a win which would set up a semi-final date at Wembley.
