Tottenham Hotspur have some of Europe’s most highly coveted players amongst their ranks.

Gary Lineker spoke exclusively to the Evening Standard, and delivered a stark warning to Spurs, suggesting that if they do not match their star players’ ambition, they could risk losing them to some of Europe’s elite clubs.

Tottenham currently sit in fifth position in the Premier League table, two points adrift of fourth placed Liverpool, and their fans are crying out not only for new additions, but also for their current stars to be tied down to more lucrative deals, in the hope that they will not be prised away this summer.

The Lilywhites have become well renowned for their frugal approach to business, with Daniel Levy refusing to budge when it comes to paying players extortionate amounts of money.

Lineker though, explained why his former club will have to change their policy when it comes to player salaries, if they are to hold onto their key stars, when speaking exclusively to the Evening Standard:

“If they want to keep the likes of Kane, Alli and star players then they will have to pay the going rate or get close to it. They’ll also have to bring players in and challenge for titles. Great players want to win things. They want to be at places they can do that.”

He then went on to share his belief that Harry Kane’s preference would be to stay at Spurs:

“I suspect Harry Kane would love that to happen, that would be his preference. If Tottenham don’t show the same ambition perhaps as one or two of the players, then they will get a little bit disgruntled and might seek different places to play. It’s a bit of a watershed moment for Tottenham.”

Whatever happens this season, Tottenham will surely face a huge fight in the summer to keep hold of the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen, but they will surely help their chances of doing just that by winning, or at least contending for major honours this term.
