The Toffees were beaten by the Premier League champions at Goodison Park and there’s been some criticism of Pickford for the second City goal.
Everton cult hero and leading pundit Gary Lineker has given his verdict on Riyad Mahrez’s goal for Manchester City against the Toffees in Saturday’s Premier League match at Goodison Park – namely whether goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was at fault.
Marco Silva’s charges suffered their third consecutive Premier League defeat after goals from Gabriel Jesus, Mahrez and Raheem Sterling sent the champions back to within five points of table-topping Liverpool.
Everton put in a battling display against the domestic treble champions as Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised for the Toffees just after the half hour mark, but Mahrez’s free kick crept past Pickford at his post.
When asked by a follower on Twitter whether the Everton goalkeeper should have done better, Lineker posted the following response:
Indeed, Pickford almost gifted a fourth to Bernardo Silva when he came rushing off his line late on, and given his poor game against Sheffield United in his last Premier League outing, it would not be surprising if Marco Silva were now to be considering his options between the sticks.
The result sees Everton finish the weekend 15th in the Premier League table, with seven points from as many matches, and up next for Silva and co is the trip to Burnley next Saturday.
