Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to react after Manchester City hired Lord Pannick to fight their case against the Premier League.

What’s the story?

Well, the Citizens have been charged with over 100 breaches of the Premier League’s rules, in what could prove to be the biggest financial scandal in English football history if they are found guilty.

Potential punishments could range from a points deduction, expulsion from the English Football League, or even the removal of titles won between the years 2009 and 2018, with that timeframe the focus of the Premier League’s four-year investigation.

Now, in response to the charge, Manchester City have hired Blackstone Chambers’ Lord Pannick KC – also known as David Pannick – as revealed by The Lawyer.

Remarkably, the 66-year-old could be paid £80,000-a-day to fight Manchester City’s corner.

That would equate to £400,000-a-week, the same amount Manchester City pay Kevin De Bruyne, the Premier League’s highest paid player.

After hearing the news, Lineker hopped onto Twitter to react with a punchy two-word tweet.

The BBC Match of the Day host replied “Pannick attack” in response to The Lawyer‘s story – you can see his tweet below.

In the meantime, things are expected to continue as normal, with The Athletic claiming that any potential punishments may not be felt until after 2025.

Who will join Lord Pannick on Manchester City case

The Lawyer add that Lord Pannick will not be alone in his fight against the Premier League.

He will be joined by Monckton Chambers’ Paul Harris KC on Manchester City’s side, while Blackstone’s Adam Lewis, Andrew Hunter KC and Jason Pobjoy will be on the Premier League’s team.

This could well prove to be the fight of Manchester City’s entire existence, as the Citizens could quite possibly find themselves right at the bottom of the English footballing ladder if found guilty.
