Speaking on the BBC Match of The Day Top 10 Podcast, Gary Lineker has been chatting about his own playing career and the fact that he could have joined Liverpool.
Lineker was one of the best strikers in the world in the 1980s, he was a World Cup Golden Boot winner and he also came second on the Ballon d’Or rankings.
Inevitably, a player this talented wasn’t going to stay at Leicester City for too long, and he eventually joined Everton.
However, Lineker has now claimed that Liverpool were also in for him at the time.
What’s been said?
Lineker spoke about having the chance to join Liverpool.
“Did Liverpool ever come in for you?” Micah Richards asked.
“Yes, when I went to Everon. It was Liverpool, Manchester United and Everton. Everton and Liverpool were the two dominant sides at the time and the decision came down to the fact that there was a clear place for him there because they were going to say Andy Gray which meant I would play up front with Sharpy. Whereas Liverpool, they would only give players one or two years, and they had Ian Rush, so I thought ‘am I going to play there’,” Lineker said.

Should’ve gone
Hindsight is 20/20, especially 35 years later, but with this information coming to light, you have to say that Lineker may have been better off heading to Liverpool.
Lineker only spent one season at Everton, and which team won the league that year? Of course it was Liverpool.
Lineker would eventually retire without an English league winners’ medal to his name, and while he may not have been the Reds’ first-choice ahead of Ian Rush, he would have been a champion if he’d joined the Anfield outfit.
