Liverpool won 3-1 at Crystal Palace this afternoon.
But there’s undeniably another VAR debate looming large.
Referee Kevin Friend awarded Liverpool a late penalty after Diogo Jota – a £45 million signing in 2020 – went to ground.
The VAR check was inconclusive and the official consulted a pitchside monitor before awarding Jurgen Klopp’s side the decision.
Fabinho confidently dispatched the resulting penalty, restoring Liverpool’s two-goal advantage.
However, Gary Lineker has emphatically offered his sentiments on Twitter:
Worthy winners
Penalty or not, you have to say Liverpool deserved the victory.
The Anfield outfit hammered Palace during the opening 45 minutes, earning a two-goal lead through Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Odsonne Edouard pulled one back for the Eagles after the break and if not for Alisson, Liverpool’s goalkeeper, they would’ve drawn level at various points.
However, on the balance of play, the visitors were still absolutely worthy winners for their dominant first-half performance.
It is unfortunate though that the post-match discussion will be dominated by the penalty decision.
