Speaking on the FootballJoe YouTube channel, Gary Lineker has been discussing former Liverpool striker Iago Aspas as a part of his punditry for La Liga.

Lineker has been fronting up the English coverage of La Liga this term, so he knows a thing or two about the Spanish league, and he says that Aspas has been brilliant for Celta Vigo, despite his struggles for Liverpool.

Aspas, as many Liverpool fans will remember, was an absolute dud at Anfield, failing to score a single Premier League goal, but since leaving Merseyside, he’s gone from strength to strength, netting double figures in La Liga in each of the last seven seasons – an impressive feat to say the least.

What’s been said about Aspas?

Lineker was responding to a fan’s tweet about Aspas.

“The final one says, ‘Iago Aspas is one of the most underrated strikers of our generation, for real’. Well, he has been a really consistent goalscorer for a long time, he’s about 34 now. He’s been brilliant for Celta Vigo for a long period of time, so I would say he is underrated. Of course, he had that spell at Liverpool where things didn’t go well for him, but I’m not going to argue with that one,” Lineker said.

Suited to Spain

Iago Aspas never quite made the grade at Liverpool, but it seems as though he’s found his feet back in his native Spain.

To be fair, so many strikers go through the same problems, English football and Spanish football are like chalk and cheese, hence why the likes of Christian Stuani, Luuk De Jong and Martin Braithwaite struggled in England only to become stars in Spain later in their careers.

Perhaps Aspas could have been a key player for Liverpool had he been given more time at Anfield.
