Gary Lineker has heaped praise on Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale on Twitter, despite the England star’s mistake against Liverpool on Wednesday night. Ramsdale was at fault for Liverpool’s opener, scored by Diogo Jota.
Ramsdale, 23, has been stunning for Arsenal since joining the club in the summer. Conceding only 22 goals in 26 and keeping 14 clean sheets, there was plenty of optimism that Arsenal could get a result against Liverpool.
However, Liverpool improved in the second half after the scoreline read 0-0 at the break. The league’s top scorers opened the scoring through Jota. His snapshot sneaked in – a shot that Ramsdale allowed in at the near post.
A huge moment in the match, that Ramsdale was at fault for. Substitute Roberto Firmino got the second in what was a brilliant win for the Reds in North London. Lineker has leapt to the defence of Ramsdale on Twitter.
Lineker on Ramsdale: Should Arsenal man be England’s no.1?
As Lineker says, it is hard to think of another mistake Ramsdale has made in an Arsenal shirt since his move to the Capital. A signing that was questioned, but has since turned out to be an inspired bit of business.
Ramsdale has been England’s best goalkeeper this season, at club level. Gareth Southgate loves Everton’s Jordan Pickford, but the Toffees stopper has made a number of mistales – in keeping with Everton’s woeful season.
When the England squad is picked in the next few days. Ramsdale and Pickford will be on it. But quite easily, Ramsdale deserves to be first choice despite his mistake on Wednesday night.
