Liverpool’s dreams of reaching a second consecutive Champions League final have taken a major blow after losing the first leg of their semi-final with Barcelona 3-0 on Wednesday night.
Almost a year since losing to Real Madrid in the Champions League final, Liverpool were hoping to get back to the grandest stage, but were facing a Lionel Messi-spearheaded Barcelona.
Ultimately, Liverpool just came up short on the night, and fell behind when Jordi Alba picked out an inch-perfect cross to meet Luis Suarez’s perfectly-timed run, and he slotted past Alisson to score against his former club and make it 1-0.
Messi got his name on the scoresheet from close range in the second half when Suarez hit the crossbar, before the Argentinian scored a sensational free kick to make it 3-0.
Liverpool now have an absolute mountain to climb in the second leg, and it would be something akin to Istanbul if the Reds are to make it to the final.
3-0 seemed a little harsh though, and Gary Lineker took to Twitter to praise Liverpool’s second half showing, feeling that they were unlucky to run into Messi.
Gary Neville attempted to mock the Reds, but Jamie Carragher defended his former club, pointing out that they were still nowhere near the 7-0 thrashing Neville received at the Camp Nou as Valencia boss.
