Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been backed for the Newcastle job.

Newcastle United are now in the market for a new manager after announcing today that Rafael Benitez is leaving the club.
The Magpies had been hoping to reach an agreement with Benitez given that his contract expires on Sunday, June 30th – but that wasn’t happened.
Newcastle announced today that Benitez will leave the club in a matter days, meaning the search is now on for a replacement.
It’s a sorry state of affairs that Mike Ashley, Lee Charnley and co couldn’t keep Benitez, who has become a hero at St James’ Park during his three-year stay with the club.
From staying with the club after relegation to keeping the club up on a tight budget, Benitez is adored by the Newcastle fans, who have now seen him move on.
The news has dominated the headlines today, and Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to share that he thinks the news is ‘awful’ for the Magpies and their fans.

Newcastle-supporting pundit Don Hutchison, born in nearby Gateshead, took to Twitter too, offering two names for the job – Gennaro Gattuso and Steven Gerrard.
Gattuso has just left AC Milan despite doing a decent job, whilst Gerrard has enjoyed a strong first year in charge of Rangers, but prying him away from Ibrox may be difficult.
