Arsenal striker scored a sensational goal against Crystal Palace.

It is a rarity to see a player score a backheeled volley at any level, so to see two in quick succession in the Premier League triggers instant debate.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud netted a sumptuous flick against Crystal Palace to open the scoring, a week after Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s majestic effort for Manchester United put their game against Sunderland beyond doubt.

Fans predictably hold opinions on whose was better, naturally showing inclination towards their own favourite star, while former player and pundit Gary Lineker was quick to praise France striker Giroud.

Lineker, commenting on Twitter, threw shade at Armenia international Mkhitaryan, by noting that Giroud’s was not in any way offside.

No negatives could be pointed at Mkhitaryan in way of technique, but there was doubt over whether his goal should have stood at all, with the playmaker at least half a yard offside for his spectacular goal.

This debate will run and run, but with one goal in December and the other in January, expect it to take until May’s Goal of the Month competition to be settled.
