The story appeared like an attempt to create a scandal, but it was met with criticism from fans.
Match of the Day host Lineker has also weighed in. He defended Alli and Barkley.
Alli and Barkley have gained some extra favour from the public after helping England win their UEFA Nations League group.
The pair will be opponents this weekend when Tottenham face Chelsea in the Premier League at Wembley.
