Should Tammy Abraham’s spot-kick against Liverpool have been re-taken?
Gary Lineker and Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock were seemingly unhappy with the decision not to re-take Tammy Abraham’s penalty which resulted in Chelsea losing the UEFA Super Cup to Liverpool on Wednesday evening in Istanbul.
The all English European affair went to spot-kicks after a 2-2 draw, but replays showed that Adrian was off his line just before he saved Abraham’s decisive penalty.
Despite VAR being in place, the decision stood as Liverpool were crowned Super Cup winners for the fourth time in their history.
After the game, both Lineker and Ruddock shared brutal comments on that controversial moment, with Lineker stating that the officials had perhaps ‘fallen asleep’ because the game had ended so late.
Liverpool supporters won’t be too fussed because it means they can add another trophy to their cabinet, but it will be a harsh start to life at Chelsea for Frank Lampard.
Whilst his team produced a strong performance against Liverpool, they have now lost back-to-back games, including that 4-0 drubbing against Manchester United.
Lampard will want to get his own back on the Reds when the duo meet in the Premier League in late September, with the fixture taking place at Stamford Bridge.
Either way, the past two games will be a learning curve for the former midfielder, who has to, at this moment in time, contest with a transfer ban.
