Tottenham Hotspur were knocked out of this season’s Champions League final by Juventus.

Ex-Spurs player Gary Lineker looks on prior to the Barclays Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United at White Hart Lane on April 10, 2016 in London, England.

Gary Lineker has told BT Sport, during their live coverage of the Champions League final, that Tottenham Hotspur could have been playing in Kiev, had they kept hold of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale.

Tottenham sold both Modric and Bale to Real Madrid, and the pair played starring roles, as Zinedine Zidane’s side won the competition last night.

Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1, with Bale scoring twice during the contest, and Spurs fans were left to reflect on what might have been.

Tottenham have troubled some of the leading contenders in Europe’s top competition this term, but ultimately came up short against Juventus.

But Lineker felt things might have been different for his old side, if Mauricio Pochettino could have called upon Modric and Bale.

“If he [Modric] was still at Tottenham, and Gareth Bale was still at Tottenham, then they might have been in the Champions League final tonight,” Lineker said.

Bale could actually make a return to Spurs this summer, with speculation surrounding his future at Madrid.

The Welshman hinted that he would be looking to leave Los Blancos after the Champions League victory, as he has not played enough this term.

Spurs would almost certainly have to make Bale the highest paid player in the history of the club if they were to sign him.
