Gary Lineker has made a joke about the Premier League after Dominic Raab resigned from his role as Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary.
The BBC Match of the Day host – who scored 187 goals in 358 appearances before the Premier League was created in 1992 – has recently clashed with the Conservatives over their Stop The Boats campaign, likening the rhetoric used by Suella Braverman to language deployed by Nazi Germany.
Therefore, Lineker wasted no time in mocking the state of the Tories.
What’s the story?
Well, the 62-year-old joked that more of Rishi Sunak’s cabinet have lost their jobs this season than Premier League managers.
A record 12 managers have been sacked in the Premier League this season, meaning just eight clubs out of 20 in England’s top-flight still have the coach they began the 2022/23 campaign with.
After hearing that Raab had resigned, Lineker wrote on Twitter: “More cabinet members have lost their jobs this season than Premier League managers.”
More departures could follow in the Premier League, as there are doubts over the future of David Moyes at West Ham as well as Steve Cooper at Nottingham Forest, with both sides still at risk of relegation to the Championship.
Why did Dominic Raab resign?
Some may be wondering why Raab resigned in the first place.
The 49-year-old handed in his resignation letter after he was “found to have bullied staff members while working as a cabinet minister across different departments” – as detailed by Sky News.

Raab did not seem to agree with the findings, describing them as “flawed” while also stating that they “set a dangerous precedent for the conduct of good government” in his letter.
Nevertheless, Raab has officially quit his role as Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary having insisted on keeping his word, should he eventually be found guilty of the bullying offences – which has now happened.
