Gary Lineker has predicted that Newcastle United will taste success one day after their League Cup final loss to Manchester United, with the Magpies losing 2-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Taking to Twitter, the Match of the Day pundit lauded the Newcastle support, who took over London and the home of English football over the weekend in one of the best fan invasions in quite some time, with the Toon Army making their presence known.

Whilst Newcastle lost on the day, the game was closer than most anticipated given that both Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka were both unavailable, meaning Loris Karius made his debut for Eddie Howe’s side and started his first professional match since 2021.

Indeed, the result might not have been there for Newcastle, but their performance in the League Cup final more than showed that better days are coming for the northeast side, with Howe and his team building something quite special for the future.

With a push for top-four now the main focus, Newcastle have the potential to return to Europe’s premier club competition for the first time in years, and a UEFA Champions League finish would easily wash over the pain of losing a League Cup final to an English rival in United.

Defeats can sometimes be as valuable lessons as wins, as every social media philosopher will profess, yet the case could be true for Newcastle, who experienced their first cup final this century and were just lacking that clinical edge to best United at Wembley.

Yet as we know from this Newcastle squad, results like this will only spur them on to the next challenge, and with three months of the season left to play, the Magpies have the potential to push themselves to a top-four finish, which could be historic.
