Nottingham Forest pulled off something of a cup upset this afternoon, beating Arsenal 4-2 at the City Ground in the Third Round of the FA Cup.

Forest sacked manager Mark Warburton a week ago and have yet to bring in a replacement, but produced a superb performance to dump the FA Cup holders out of this year’s competition.

Eric Lichaj put Forest in front before Per Mertesacker quickly equalised for Arsenal, and Lichaj made it 2-1 with a stunning volley on the stroke of half time.

Second half penalties from Ben Brereton and Kieran Dowell – either side of Danny Welbeck’s goal for Arsenal – handed Forest a 4-2 win, and even Joe Worrall’s late red card couldn’t take the gloss off Forest’s victory.

Forest now advance into the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, putting their managerial confusion behind them to knock out one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

After the final whistle, pundits Chris Sutton and Gary Lineker took to Twitter to offer their reactions to the game, though took somewhat different approaches.

Sutton praised Forest for a ‘superb performance’, noting that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger can’t rely on the FA Cup to save his job this time around, and questioned his decision to rotate his team.

Lineker on the other hand congratulated Forest but joked that Forest are one of the East Midlands’ ‘lesser lights’, as the Leicester City fan couldn’t resist one joke at their rivals’ expense.
