Tottenham Hotspur drew with Sporting on Tuesday evening, but on another day Spurs would’ve been celebrating a dramatic victory.

Indeed, Tottenham did find the back of the net in the final knockings of the game via a Harry Kane goal.

This looked like it was a true poachers effort. Kane was in the right place at the right time, firing home after a deflected attempted headed pass by Emerson Royal.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium erupted, but the cheers were quickly replaced by a stunned silence as the big screen in the stadium showed those three dreaded letters – VAR.

The goal was disallowed due to an apparent offside – for our money the striker looked to be behind the ball, so it should have stood, and we’re not the only ones perplexed by this decision.

Indeed, ex-Spurs star and Match of the Day pundit, Gary Lineker, has taken to social media to share his view on the controversy.

Lineker calls the situation ridiculous, and we’re inclined to agree.

Now, we’re not even saying that the wrong call was made – perhaps the officials have seen something that we’re missing, but the lack of wider communication on matters such as these is infuriating.

This would be so much less of an issue if we were privy to the conversation that happens between the VAR and the on-field officials, but for some reason or another, we’re unable to listen to the logic that is behind these decisions.

As ever, the referees are protected and no post-match interviews have been conducted, so this whole situation remains a bit of a mystery – allowing for scrutiny from fans and media figures such as Lineker.

Refereeing decisions are always going to cause controversy, but there are ways and means for UEFA and any other governing bodies to take the heat out of these situations.
