Gary Lineker told Alan Shearer moments after Liverpool’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United that Jurgen Klopp’s FA Cup record is ‘almost as bad as yours’, as broadcast live on BBC One’s Match of the Day programme.

Whilst Shearer is the highest goalscorer in Premier League history and he won the title at Blackburn, he did lose two FA Cup finals with his boyhood club, and just like Liverpool’s man in the dugout, he is without that trophy.

The time has passed for Shearer to make amends, but Jurgen Klopp still has the chance to add FA Cup silverware to Liverpool’s cabinet, but not this season after yesterday’s result.

Nonetheless, as the final whistle blew at Old Trafford, MOTD host Lineker couldn’t help but make this comment.

“Jurgen Klopp walking off there,” said Lineker. “His record in the FA Cup is almost as bad as yours.

Shearer laughed and responded by saying: “I wondered when you were going to get that in.”

It will be interesting to see how Klopp reacts to Liverpool’s FA Cup exit because his team haven’t been dancing to his tunes as much as he would have liked in recent weeks.

Mo Salah was back in the goals on Sunday and Roberto Firmino was also showing glimpses of his best.

That will be needed when they lock horns in a Premier League title tussle with Tottenham on Thursday.
