Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to react after Derby County confirmed the appointment of Wayne Rooney as their new manager.

The Manchester United and England legend has been hired by the Rams as Phillip Cocu’s successor, signing a deal until the summer of 2023.

It is Rooney’s first job in management, and comes after he led Derby as player-manager after Cocu departed in November.

After hearing of Derby’s decision, Lineker tweeted the following.

The BBC Match of the Day states that he hopes Rooney is successful at Pride Park – on the basis of what we’ve seen so far, there’s no reason why he won’t be.

The 35-year-old oversaw nine games as player-manager, and picked up some pretty good results.

Rooney guided Derby to three wins and four draws from those nine matches, while also impressively recording five clean sheets on that run.

In accepting the role of manager on a full-time basis, the former DC United striker has also called time on his illustrious playing career.

During his playing career, Rooney won five Premier League titles and the Champions League, while also becoming Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer.

After another ex-England international in Frank Lampard enjoyed success at Pride Park, it will be interesting to see if Rooney can too.
