Gary Lineker compares Everton to Tottenham Hotspur – but not in a good way

Gary Lineker claims this Everton side reminds him of the 2013 Tottenham side.

Pundit Gary Lineker has told The Mirror that he thinks this Everton team remind him of Tottenham Hotspur in 2013, after they had sold Gareth Bale.

Everton have endured a miserable season so far, winning just three games in the Premier League so far – and their poor early season form resulted in Ronald Koeman losing his job last month.

Everton have still yet to replace the Dutchman, but after losing 5-1 to Atalanta and 4-1 to Southampton in the last few days, it’s fairly clear that caretaker manager David Unsworth won’t be landing the job.

It’s imperative that Everton get a new manager in quickly to settle themselves down and finally pull themselves clear of the relegation zone after a disastrous few months.

The Toffees sold star striker Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United over the summer, and not only did they not replace their top goalscorer with a new striker, but their other signings haven’t panned out either.

Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney were among the new arrivals at Goodison Park, but the various signings have hailed to help Everton kick on.

Now, former Toffees striker and current pundit Gary Lineker has told The Mirror that he thinks Everton are similar to Tottenham’s 2013 side, which lost Gareth Bale to Real Madrid, and then struggled after signing the likes of Vlad Chiriches, Etienne Capoue, Paulinho, Nacer Chadli, Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado.

Lineker sees major similarities between this Everton team and that Tottenham side, noting how hard it can be for new signings to settle in – though one key difference is that caretaker Unsworth hasn’t saved the season like Tim Sherwood did for Spurs after Andre Villas-Boas’ departure.

“When you sell a big player, you get loads of money for him and lots of new players come in, some will adapt pretty well but others won’t adapt at all and it takes a while to find that out,” said Lineker. “It becomes complicated, and it reminds me of Spurs selling Gareth Bale and brought in seven new players.

“You try different things and all of a sudden, by the time Christmas comes round, you still don’t know your best team and you’re near the bottom of the table. That’s kind of what’s gone on with Everton, and it’s sad,” he added.
