Gareth Southgate raised a few eyebrows this week by selecting four right-backs in his England squad, but Gary Lineker believes Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold could be a star in the midfield.

It’s long been a theory that Alexander-Arnold could be a brilliant midfield player, but it’s something we’ve rarely seen, with transfermarkt’s data suggesting that he’s only ever played as a midfielder on one occasion for Liverpool, against Stoke City way back in 2018.

However, Lineker has claimed that Alexander-Arnold would be brilliant in this role.

It’s certainly an interesting theory, but it’s one that doesn’t have much evidence to support it.

Yes, Alexander-Arnold is a great technical footballer, but the reality is that we’ve never seen him star in that role.

On paper, the Liverpool man has all of the attributes needed to be a wonderful midfield player, but positional awareness is often something that is hard to teach.

It’s an experiment that Gareth Southgate may want to put into practice, and Lineker certainly believes that it would work, but whether or not it will, remains to be seen.

If Alexander-Arnold’s talents can translate into a midfield role then England may have a great chance of going a long way in the Euros.
