Everton were beaten by high-flying Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday at Goodison Park.
BBC presenter Gary Lineker brutally stated that the black cat that interrupted Everton’s 3-1 defeat [BBC Sport] to Wolves at Goodison Park did ‘more running’ than the home players.
As reported by BBC Sport, the Premier League encounter was stooped for several minutes on Merseyside as stewards tried to usher the cat off the field.
Despite the halt in play and distraction for the players, recently-promoted Wolves went on to secure all three points against Marco Silva’s side.
Whilst presenting Match of the Day, Lineker couldn’t help but aim a dig at the Everton players and jokingly compare their performances with the cat.
“Two and a half minutes that cat was on the pitch and they couldn’t get him,” Lineker told MOTD on BBC One on 02/02/2019. “He did more running than the Everton players, apparently.”
During the game in itself, Ruben Neves opened the scoring after five minutes when Leighton Baines fouled Matt Doherty in the penalty area, with the Wolves midfielder putting away his spot kick.
Andre Gomes did equalise after 27 minutes after his powerful shot was too good for the opposition goalkeeper, but Raul Jimenez headed his team into the lead just before the break.
The away side continued to attack in the second half and were rewarded once again when Leander Dendoncker made sure his team took home all the points.
As a result, Wolves are now sitting seventh in the Premier League table, five points ahead of ninth-placed Everton, who are only two points ahead of 12th-placed West Ham.
