Leeds United legend Gary Kelly has given his honest opinion of the current state of affairs at Elland Road including the team’s form in the Championship and his thoughts on Marcelo Bielsa.

The 44-year-old is a one-club man, having played his entire professional footballing career with the Whites and clocking up more than 450 appearances between 1992 and 2007, according to Transfermarkt.

Kelly has experienced some of the highest highs of Leeds’ recent history – he played in 10 Champions League games for the club – but also some of the most crushing lows – his last season at the club ended in relegation to League One.

As a result, the Republic of Ireland ace is a very qualified voice to give his insight on Leeds matters, and in conversation with the Daily Star, his comments are optimistic but at the same time with a hint of realism and pragmatism which fans must take heed of.

Within that, Kelly has given not one but two warnings – the first regarding what would happen if the club fails to win automatic promotion, and the second regarding the future of Bielsa should the club not go up into the Premier League altogether this term.

“It’s great to see where they are now because the city is buzzing again,” said Kelly. “They’re just so close, it’s the 100 year anniversary so what a year to get promoted. I hope we can go up automatically. The playoffs haven’t been good to us – we have no record there.”

On the subject of Bielsa, he added: “He’s a great manager. I’d say if we don’t go up it would be bad news for us. He’s amazing, his attention to detail is perfect. He is going to be a wanted man if we don’t go up.”

Leeds, second in the Championship table, face Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road in Saturday’s late kickoff, while rivals Sheffield United – currently one point behind the Whites in third – host Millwall at 3pm.
