Sheffield Wednesday bounced back from a three-match winless run to secure an emphatic 3-0 win over Leeds United on Sunday afternoon in the Championship at Hillsborough.

Gary Hooper scored twice in the first half, and Kieran Lee added another in the 82nd minute to seal all the three points for the Owls.

The 29-year-old forward said after the match that the Owls should have beaten their local rivals by a bigger margin.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal was under pressure, and questions had been raised over his future after the Owls’ back-to-back defeats against Sheffield United and Birmingham City.

However, they head into the international break on a high with a strong performance on Sunday. More than the result, it’s the manner of the victory that should please the Sheffield manager.

Hooper said that he rued not scoring more goals. In fact, he could have claimed his first Owls hat-trick but saw his effort expertly kept out by Felix Wiedwald.

“We’ve had the same feeling in the dressing room; we knew we had to win after two losses but we kept it the same, worked hard and we got the win and a great one at that,” said Hooper, as quoted by The Star.

“We scored three goals but for sure it could have been more. I should be scoring a hat-trickl the keeper has got a hand to the last one so, no hat-trick today but hopefully one will come eventually.”

With this result, Wednesday have moved to 12th in the Championship table. Leeds United have dropped out of the top four, but are only four points behind league leaders Cardiff.
