Rangers beat Livingston 1-0 away from home last night.

Gary Holt, Manager of Livingston FC looks on prior to the Ladbrokes Premiership match between Livingston and Rangers at Almondvale Stadium on September 30, 2018 in Livingston, Scotland.

Livingston boss Gary Holt has told the Daily Record that referee Don Robertson apologised to his players for not sending off Rangers’ Filip Helander last night.

Rangers travelled to the Tony Macaroni Arena on Wednesday night to battle for a place in the last four of the Scottish League cup – the stage they lost at last season.

Steven Gerrard is keen to go further than last year, so unsurprisingly named a strong side for last night’s game – and his side claimed a narrow 1-0 victory in an unconvincing display.

Glen Kamara’s early strike proved to be the only goal of the game for Rangers, as they couldn’t break down Livi to grab an all-important second.

Rangers did escape a blow though, as defender Helander brought down striker Lyndon Dykes when clean through on goal, which looked like it could have been a straight red card.

Referee Robertson not only didn’t send Helander off, but he didn’t even give a free kick, adjudging that the Swedish defender got the ball.

Holt admitted after the game that he thought it was a mistake, and even claimed that Robertson had a look at the incident after the game and decided that it should have been a red card, even apologising to the Livingston players for getting it wrong – meaning Rangers were let off the hook with this incident.

“I think the referee said he had look and said it was a red card after the game,” said Holt. “He’s apologised to the players and sometimes you have to accept he is man enough to do that. I think he said to the players walking off,” he added.
