Glasgow Rangers are close to signing Russell Martin. Gary Holt feels the defender is perfect for the Ibrox club.

Former Scotland player Gary Holt reckons that Russell Martin will be a perfect signing for Rangers in the January transfer window.

The 32-year-old defender has flown in to Scotland ahead of sealing a loan move to Rangers. The Norwich centre-back will undergo his medical and the announcement is expected to be made today.

Martin will become Graeme Murty’s fifth January signing as he continues to perform a major surgery on Pedro Caixinha’s failed squad.

Declan John’s move has been made permanent, while the likes of Sean Goss, Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings have joined the Gers on loan.

Murty will need a leader at the back, and Holt believes Martin will step up the plate. He says the club can bank on Martin taking responsibilities.

He adds that Martin is a dedicated and passionate performer, and is aware of the size and structure of the club. Therefore, his signing is not a gamble.

Martin was the skipper of the Norwich side that won promotion to the Premier League. His leadership qualities will come in handy for the Ibrox club.

“Russell’s exactly what Rangers need as he’s a good talker on the pitch and a leader off the pitch as well as on it,” said Holt, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“You can bank on him taking responsibility and helping others. They need this quality of
player, someone who has a British football mentality.

“There’s no gamble with Russell as you know what you’re getting, a dedicated and passionate performer. He knows the size and structure of Rangers and is coming from a high level.

“There’s a perception of him as a middle-of-the-road player but he played with Norwich in the Premier League for three seasons. When Norwich won promotion into the Premier League he was the skipper and led the club up from the Championship. Nobody was in any doubt he was the leader.”
