Steven Gerrard’s Rangers are interested in signing Gary Cahill in the summer transfer window, according to The Sun.

What’s the story?

The Sun are reporting this evening that Rangers manager Gerrard wants to bring Cahill to Ibrox.

The former Chelsea central defender is out of contract at Premier League club Crystal Palace.

Cahill, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2012, is now a free agent, and Rangers want to secure his services.

The Scottish Premiership champions could give the 35-year-old centre-back £35,000 per week as salary.

Palace want the former Bolton Wanderers defender to stay, but their offer is ‘less basic cash with extras for appearances’.

Good signing for Rangers?

Cahill is 35 now, and it is clear that he is past his best.

However, the veteran could still do a good job in the Scottish Premiership, if his playing time is managed properly.

Rangers could play in the Champions League next season and will face a big challenge from Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title.

Gerrard knows Cahill well, and he could make use of his big-game know-how and experience next season.

Cahill scored one goal and gave one assist in 20 Premier League appearances for Palace last season.
