Cahill picked out the League Cup triumph over Spurs in 2015 as his most satisfying win as a Blue.

Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill has told the club’s official website that, in his eyes, beating Tottenham Hotspur in the 2015 League Cup final was his most satisfying win as a player, even ahead of winning the Champions League.

In a feature with the Blues site to commemorate his fifth anniversary at Stamford Bridge, Cahill was asked about a series of highlights from his time in west London.

There are some obvious stand-outs. The England defender has won every available major honour with Chelsea, holding aloft the FA Cup and Champions League in his first half-season before adding the Europa League crown the following season and a league title in 2014-15.

In that Premier League-winning season, he also picked up the League Cup thanks to a 2-0 victory over Tottenham at Wembley.

Perhaps surprisingly, the 31-year-old chose that win over Spurs as the most satisfying game from his five years at Stamford Bridge because of the context in which Chelsea won.

Cahill told the Blues website: “The game which gave me most satisfaction was the League Cup final against Tottenham in 2015, but I only say that because certain things in football stick with you.

“Earlier that season we lost 5-3 away against them, which happens, you lose games. But for months after that match I was always having to answer questions about it in interviews. You would have thought we’d lost the Champions League final to them, I couldn’t believe so much fuss was made about one game.

“Sometimes in football you get an opportunity to quieten a few people down so it was very satisfying when we beat them at Wembley.”

Cahill clearly relished silencing Spurs and their supporters on that day at Wembley a little under two years ago.

Since then, his side have enjoyed playing Spurs on several other occasions. The infamous 2-2 draw at the Bridge last May extinguished any hopes Tottenham had of a first league title in half a century, and they came from behind to beat then-unbeaten Spurs 2-1 at home in November.

However, a fortnight ago their run of favourable form against their rivals came to an end as Spurs recorded a thoroughly-deserved 2-0 win at White Hart Lane.
