Gary Cahill has revealed on Chelsea’s official website that he turned down Sheffield Wednesday and Derby County to join Aston Villa back when he was a kid.

Cahill, who moved to Chelsea from Bolton Wanderers in January 2012 for a transfer fee reported by The Telegraph to be worth £7 million, started his professional club football career at Villa.

The 32-year-old England international central defender has revealed that he had the chance to move to Wednesday or Derby, but he chose Villa instead.

Cahill told Chelsea’s official website: “I was around 13 when I was scouted by a few teams and I went into the set-up from there.

“I was living near Sheffield, and Sheffield Wednesday offered me a contract, so did Derby, but I ended up going to Aston Villa.

“It made no sense in terms of where it was but there was something about the club and I had a good feeling about it. The facilities and the coaching were fantastic.”

Could history repeat itself?

According to The Telegraph, Villa could try to sign Cahill from Chelsea in the January transfer window.

Calciomercato.com has credited AC Milan with interest in the former Bolton central defender.

Perhaps Cahill will choose Villa this time just like he did back when he was 13 years of age.

Signing the Chelsea defender would be a huge coup for the Villans and would enhance their chances of winning automatic promotion to the Premier League from the Championship this season.

Villa are eighth in the Championship table at the moment with 31 points from 20 matches.
