Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Garth Crooks believes that Erik Lamela should be scoring goals more regularly.
Argentina international winger Lamela scored his first Premier League goal on Saturday, netting the winner in Tottenham’s 2-1 victory over Burnley at White Hart Lane.
It was a great strike as well, reminiscent of the many similar goals Gareth Bale had scored during his time at Spurs.
Crooks has included the 22-year-old former AS Roma star in his Team of the Week for the BBC, but has urged the youngster to make scoring goals a habit.
“He threatened to score from the right hand side of the pitch earlier in the game and Burnley didn’t heed the warning signs,” wrote the 56-year-old.
“When he tried it a second time the Clarets paid the price as the ball flew past Tom Heaton in the Burnley goal.
“Not a bad way to open your Premier League account but frankly a player with Erik Lamela’s talent should be scoring more goals than the occasional one or two.”
Lamela’s talent cannot be disputed, but he is frustratingly inconsistent. Easily one of the most promising young players in Europe, the former River Plate star has yet to full convince the Premier League followers.
As good as Lamela was against Burnley – and he was truly brilliant (click here to read more) – one needs to remember that it was against a promoted team struggling for survival in the Premier League.
Lamela will face better defenders as the season progresses, but hopefully for the Tottenham defenders, he will be more consistent in the coming weeks.
