Tottenham suffered a 3-1 loss to Manchester City on Saturday evening.
Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Garth Crooks has claimed in his BBC Sport Team of the Week column that Ben Davies was lucky not to be sent off for a challenge on Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany.
Davies, 24, was part of the Tottenham side that failed to prevent a 3-1 loss to Spurs on Saturday at Wembley, as Gabriel Jesus, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling all found the back of the net, cancelling out Christian Eriksen’s strike.
During the match, Wales international Davies went in on centre-back Kompany with a studs up, shin-high tackle that many believe should have deserved a red card – in what would have been the former Swansea left-back’s first red of his career.
Instead, Davies was only shown a yellow card but Crooks believes the left-footed defender should have been sent off, and claimed he was not only lucky to remain on the field, but to finish with all his teeth intact.
“As for the tackle by Ben Davies on Kompany which was missed by referee Jon Moss – it was a shocker. Davies is a lucky boy – not to stay on the field but, by the reaction of Kompany, to have all his teeth,” Crooks said.
Davies has been in decent form for the north Londoners this season, scoring two goals and laying on another six assists for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as he continues to be chosen as first choice over Danny Rose.
Spurs’ number 33 is expected to start on Tuesday night as Tottenham travel to the south coast to face Brighton, with the aim of getting back on track and holding on to a place in the top four.
Seven points separate fourth-placed Spurs from London rivals Chelsea in fifth, but with only five games to play, it looks unlikely that Pochettino’s side will give up their Champions League spot.
