Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that Harry Kane’s form is now putting pressure on Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy ahead of the summer transfer window as Spurs cannot expect to keep the striker if they fail to win trophies.

Kane took his tally in the Premier League to 23 for the season at the weekend as he scored the winner in the North London derby. The striker now has eight goals in his last seven games in all competitions – and that is not even his most impressive run of form of the campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur Chairman Daniel Levy looks on during the Barclays Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Everton at White Hart Lane on August 29, 2015 in London, England.

The win keeps Mauricio Pochettino’s men in the hunt for the top four in the top flight, but the title appears to be beyond them this term with Manchester City 20 points clear right now. And Crooks has suggested that Spurs – who remain in the FA Cup and return to Champions League action this week – cannot expect to keep Kane happy if they are unable to win silverware, and thus, the onus is now on Levy to show some major ambition in the summer.

He told BBC Sport: “Kane’s ability to retain possession in tight situations and bring his team-mates into the picture was also quite outstanding. Add in his overall work-rate for the team and his goals-per-game ratio and you are left asking yourself: can Spurs really expect to keep this player without winning a trophy in return?

Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur applauds afterthe Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal at Wembley Stadium on February 10, 2018 in London, England.

“It is therefore incumbent on chairman Daniel Levy to bring in the players who don’t merely flirt with the Premier League title but can actually win it.”

In fairness to Levy, Spurs have not been quiet in previous windows, with Lucas Moura arriving in January, while Davinson Sanchez and Serge Aurier were among those signed last summer.

But if Tottenham are going to take that next step and ensure that they are winning trophies on a fairly regular basis, they perhaps do need to set their sights even higher in the window.

They certainly have a squad that is good enough to rival any team domestically or in Europe, and perhaps it would be fair to suggest that they are only one truly inspired signing away from being good enough to clear that final hurdle that they have certainly threatened to leap over in recent years.
