Garth Crooks has claimed in his BBC Sport Team of the Week column that Tottenham Hotspur will not win the Premier League title if they continue ti defend set-pieces as they did against Watford.

Spurs suffered a 2-1 loss to Watford on Sunday afternoon at Vicarage Road, despite going in front through an own goal by Abdoulaye Doucoure, who has previously been linked with a move to Spurs.

But Mauricio Pochettino’s side conceded just before the 70th minute mark, as Troy Deeney headed home a Jose Holebas free-kick unchallenged to level the scores.

Just seven minutes later, and defender Craig Cathcart put Watford in front with Holebas providing the delivery from a corner. Crooks was shocked by Spurs’ defending, claiming they will not win the title with defending like that.

“How did Spurs lose to Watford? What’s that about? If you can’t defend set-pieces you can’t win titles, that’s for sure,” Crooks said. “After the highs of Old Trafford, Spurs fans suffered the indignation of losing to Watford having taken the lead.

“I’m happy to buy the shampoo if the Tottenham players are that concerned about heading the ball in their own box. I’ve never seen anything like it – and after such a super victory over Manchester United last week.”

Both Spurs and Watford went into the game with 100 per cent records after three Premier League matches, and Watford were the surprise winners to continue their perfect start.

Spurs next face a difficult test against Liverpool at home, before beginning their Premier League campaign against Italian giants Inter Milan at the San Siro on September 18.
