Tottenham Hotspur defender Serge Aurier made his return to the team at the weekend after being overlooked during the first month.

He could not have asked for it to have gone much better, with Spurs beating Crystal Palace 4-0.

His role in helping Spurs keep a clean sheet earned him a selection in Garth Crooks’ team of the week for BBC Sport, although the pundit had some harsh words for the Ivory Coast international.

He asked why Aurier had been such a disappointment since signing for Tottenham from Paris Saint-Germain two seasons ago.

Crooks said he was often frustrated watching the right-back: “Every time I have seen Aurier play for Tottenham I have been left desperately disappointed and quite often angry. Disappointed because of his lack of performance and angry because of his inability to respect the depth of quality in the Premier League.

“This is not France where there are only a couple of decent teams in the league but the toughest and most demanding league in the world. Against Crystal Palace the former Paris St-Germain defender woke up to that fact and finally played like it. And about time.”

Aurier has always had it tough at Tottenham due to Kieran Trippier being at the club. This has now changed, with the England international sold to Atletico Madrid.

He is Tottenham’s most experienced right-back, and has to show it.

Now in his third season at Spurs, its very possible he steps it up, but until he can show it consistently, and stay injury free, the jury will remain out.
