Garth Crooks says Newcastle defender Fabian Schar’s clearance could be Bruce’s lifeline

The Swiss international was Newcastle’s saviour against Brighton on Saturday.

Garth Crooks has told the BBC that Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar’s clearance could prove to be a lifeline for the club as well as manager Steve Bruce at the end of the season.

The Magpies had to settle for a goalless draw at home against Graham Potter’s Brighton and Hove Albion and that wouldn’t have been the case if it wasn’t for Schar’s fantastic clearance off the line to deny Aaron Connolly.

Newcastle United’s performances since the back to back defeats in the opening two games have been fairly positive and a loss against the Seagulls would have been a huge dent to their confidence. However, Schar’s brilliance helped them gain a point and the defender made it into Crooks’ team of the week.

He wrote: “The chip by Aaron Connolly was a certain goal and it needed something very special from a defender to clear the danger. That moment of magic came from Fabian Schar whose clearance off the line was nothing short of amazing.

“The clearance off the line by Schar could, come the end of the season, be Newcastle and Steve Bruce’s lifeline.”

Steve Bruce hasn’t quite filled the Magpies faithful with confidence, winning just one game so far. Safety in the Premier League is Newcastle’s biggest priority and Crooks feels that Schar’s clearance could well prove to be the lifeline for Bruce come the end of the season.

With the Premier League as competitive as ever, each point is of massive importance and if Newcastle manage to stay up by a single point, Schar’s clearance could well be pointed out as the moment of the season that helped them maintain their status as a top-flight club.
