Everton’s Seamus Coleman celebrates
Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that he is surprised Seamus Coleman is still an Everton player.
Coleman starred for the Toffees this weekend in their 2-0 win against Sunderland, with Crooks naming the defender in his Premier League Team of the Week.
Coleman has been at Everton since 2009, signed by the club by the manager against who he starred this weekend, David Moyes.
Crooks said: “I can’t understand for the life of me (and I apologise to Evertonians) how Manchester United or City haven’t lured him away from Goodison Park.
“Coleman brings a dimension to Everton very few full-backs bring to a team. The problem for the opposition is that Coleman has been doing it for some considerable time. Coleman is an infectious player and it’s a joy to watch him play.”
Not bringing Coleman to Manchester United was arguably an error made by David Moyes when he landed the job at Old Trafford, moving for midfielder Marouane Fellaini instead.
The Toffees though have always driven a hard bargain when it comes to selling their players, and just like with Leighton Baines, have resisted overtures for his signature.
Both Manchester clubs need new recruits at right-back, and Coleman at 28 is a proven Premier League performer.
His recent performances could drive interest again this summer, but the smart money would be placed on Coleman staying at Goodison Park.
