Tottenham Hotspur beat Crystal Palace 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Pundit Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that he thinks centre back may be Eric Dier’s true position after his display In Tottenham’s 1-0 at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
After a disappointing FA Cup outing at Rochdale last week, Spurs were back in Premier League action on Sunday, making the short trip to South London to take on Palace at Selhurst Park.
Spurs were pushing for a key three points but squandered a host of chances, with Harry Kane particularly guilty before heading home Christian Eriksen’s corner to give Spurs a late lead and all three points.
Spurs sit fourth in the Premier League table after Sunday’s win, and have now moved 10 points clear of North London rivals Arsenal in the table as they attempt to tighten their grip on a top four place.
What’s all the more impressive for Spurs is that they managed to claim their win and a clean sheet without star centre back duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, with both players missing out at Selhurst Park.
That left Pochettino to play Davinson Sanchez alongside Eric Dier in the heart of defence, with Dier handed a rare start as a centre back in a four-man defence having often played as a holding midfielder under Pochettino.
Dier turned in a strong showing at centre back, keeping Palace at bay and also handling physical strikers Christian Benteke and Alexander Sorloth to help Spurs claim all three points.
After the game, pundit Garth Crooks spoke to BBC Sport and named Dier in his team of the week, suggesting that centre back may now be Dier’s best position, and should stay there after a ‘comprehensive’ display on Sunday.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such a comprehensive performance by Eric Dier,” said Crooks. “He had Christian Benteke and Alexander Sorloth on toast in Tottenham’s win at Crystal Palace. I’m beginning to think centre-back is Dier’s best position and he should stay there,” he added.
