Crooks was especially praising of Lallana, hailing his work rate, which has made him a real fan favourite.

He said: “When Liverpool fans start picking players out for special attention, rest assured they have seen something worthy of praise.

“Adam Lallana’s work-rate has been quite phenomenal recently and a major feature in Liverpool’s victory over Chelsea.”

Crooks did go onto argue that the tireless efforts in midfield should not restrict their flair, adding of the former Southampton man: “Lallana is developing into an impressive player but he is no Coutinho.”

Lallana himself would not even attempt to replicate Coutinho’s skill set, but he can he an effective complement to the Brazilian playmaker.

The 28-year-old scored the previous weekend in a rampant 4-1 win over reigning champions Leicester, and while his performance against Chelsea was more industrious than flashy, it was of no lesser importance.

He completed 86 per cent of his passes and while he had no shots on target or no chances created, Lallana touched the ball 74 times, a figure bettered only of his teammates by Jordan Henderson and James Milner.
