Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that he thinks Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey’s fitness levels are a ‘cause for concern’.

Shelvey has regularly been overlooked by Steve Bruce this term, but he returned to Newcastle’s starting line-up at the weekend and impressed.

The Magpies beat West Ham United 3-2, with Shelvey managing to get on the scoresheet during the contest.

The central midfielder’s distribution was also on point throughout the match.

And Crooks was very impressed by Shelvey’s display, although the BBC Sport pundit questions whether his fitness levels are good enough.

“This player will look back on his career and genuinely wonder why he never won more caps for England,” Crooks said.

“On his day he can be as good as any midfield player in the country, but his fitness levels have always been a cause for concern along with the potential to cause mischief.

“Against West Ham, Shelvey demonstrated just how effective he can be on the ball. The dilemma for Magpies manager Steve Bruce is: does he stick with Shelvey or return to those who can regularly provide the grit and the endeavour?”

Newcastle’s performance against West Ham was one of their best of the season, so it seems likely that Shelvey will retain his place over the weeks ahead.

Both Matty and Sean Longstaff have been favoured in recent weeks, but could face a battle to get back into the team now.

Sean was suspended for Newcastle’s game against West Ham, and still has another two games to serve of his ban before he can return.

Newcastle are now up to 15th in the Premier League table, with their next match coming against Bournemouth at St. James’ Park.
