Garth Crooks comments on Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil played well for Arsenal against Everton in the Premier League.

Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Garth Crooks has admitted to BBC Sport that he does not know why Arsenal attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil is criticised so much.

Ozil is one of the best and most creative players in the Premier League and has been on the books of Arsenal since 2003.

The 29-year-old is known for creating chances and providing assists for his teammates, but the former Real Madrid star has been criticised for his playing style.

Many have branded the German as a ‘luxury player’ and believe that he needs to run more and help out in defence.

Former Tottenham forward Crooks, though, seems to have defended Ozil after his performance against Everton at the weekend.

The 2014 World Cup winner with Germany scored once in Arsenal’s 5-2 win at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The performance of Ozil against Ronald Koeman’s side was brilliant, and Crooks has included the Arsenal star in his BBC Premier League Team of the Week.

Crooks told BBC Sport about Ozil: “However, what I can’t understand is why Ozil has become Arsenal’s whipping boy over the years?

“I know he can be temperamental and is prone to sulk but he is not the first player to behave in this way and he certainly won’t be the last.”

“I have always been of the opinion that the best teams tend to have the best players and usually fans want to keep them,” added Crooks. “So why does Ozil get such a bad rap from some Arsenal supporters?”
