Garth Crooks backs VAR’s call to rule out Tottenham’s goal during defeat to Leicester City

VAR took the headlines once again as Tottenham Hotspur suffered a narrow defeat to Leicester City on Saturday afternoon,

Garth Crooks has defended VAR for ruling out Tottenham’s second goal during their 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday afternoon at the King Power Stadium.

The BBC Sport pundit claimed that he ‘hates’ VAR, but Spurs ‘struggled’ to react well to Serge Aurier’s goal being disallowed in the second half.

Not long after that goal, Brendan Rodgers side equalised before James Maddison struck a wonderful strike from outside of the area five minutes from time.

Speaking to Final Score on BBC One (21/09/2019 16:25 pm), former striker Crooks honestly admitted that he doesn’t like VAR, but players and fans need to get used to it.

“I hate it [VAR],” Crooks told Final Score. “I think it’s meddling. I think it’s interfering and I think it’s a busy body. But we have got it, and when it comes to the science we have to accept it. You can’t argue with the offside decision, they got that right.

“I wouldn’t say Spurs lacked fight, I would just say they struggled to adjust when that VAR decision hit them. I can understand fans saying it’s sucking the life out of me – I don’t know what’s going on. But that’s what it is – Players have now got to adjust and so do have the fans.”

The decision to rule Heung-Min Son offside for Aurier’s goal hasn’t gone down well with some because there is the argument that he was level, or it’s hard to tell whether he was in an offside position or not.

VAR has caused a lot of reaction this season and it is something that has played a part in a number of Tottenham’s games.

Last month, VAR fell in their favour when Gabriel Jesus’ last-minute winner for Manchester City was ruled out because of a handball during the lead up to the goal.
